 KFCF, FM 88.1, will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the
Fresno Free College Foundation with a program airing at

7 p.m. Sunday.

The foundation, which educators founded in the late 1960s
as a guardian of free speech, operates the local community-supported
radio station.

Ellie Bluestein will host the two-hour look at the foundation.

The program will include archival recordings and a discussion
by a panel of early foundation leaders.

Alex Vavoulis, the foundation's president emeritus, is scheduled
to be part of the panel.

The Fresno Free College Foundation also will mark the anniversary
at a banquet at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Downtown Club,
2120 Kern St.

Gary Brechin, described as a historical geographer, is the
guest speaker.

His topic is "Rotten Foundations: The Bureau of Reclamation
and the Urbanization of the American West."

California State University, Fresno, professor Sudarshan
Kapoor and local civil liberties attorney Howard Watkins
will be given the Free Speech Award.

Tickets are $37.50. Call 233-2221 to make a reservation.

Finally, the community radio station will present an evening
of music featuring David Gans and Brad "Dudeboy" Rogers at
8 p.m. Sept. 12.

The fund-raiser will be held at Club Fred, 1426 N. Van Ness
Ave.

Gans hosts "Dead to the World," which airs at 8 p.m. Wednesdays
on KFCF.

Rogers is a local singer and songwriter.

Tickets for the concert, $8 in advance and $10 at the door,
are available at The Movies, 1435 N. Van Ness Ave.

Johnny on the spot

Fresno's Steven Anthony Lawrence, who stars on the Disney
Channel series "Even Stevens," is the spokesperson for the
Johnny Rockets Rocket Kids Program.

"One of my favorite places to eat and hang out with my friends
is at Johnny Rockets in Fresno.

"The kids' menu is great, the 'Funtastic Voyage' activity
book is super-cool, and you can even get free nickels to
play your favorite tunes on the jukebox," Lawrence says.

Lawrence appeared at a the Third Street Promenade in Santa
Monica at an event to kick off the restaurant's new kids'
meal menu.

Other news

High rollers: NBC is hosting the national online contest
"It Happened in Vegas."

Contestants are asked to recount personal tales about Vegas
at www.

vegasfreedom.com. The contest is to promote the network's
new series, "Las Vegas."

One winner gets an all-expenses-paid trip to Hollywood to
attend the Sept. 16 premiere and private after-party for
the NBC show. Entry deadline is Sept. 4.

Late-night show: The new one-hour late-night show "Makin'
Noise" now airs at 1 p.m. Saturdays on KFRE, Channel 59.

"Makin' Noise" combines music videos with Xtreme sports footage
and fashion. Hoyt Christopher, previously seen on the Playboy
Channel and E! Entertainment, is the host.

Good morning: KMPH, Channel 26, is doubling its daily offering
of news.

The local Fox affiliate will launch a morning news program
in September. KMPH now airs only one hour of news at 10 p.m.
daily.

Details will be announced at a later date.
