Dear KFCF Friends and Subscribers,
Thanks for your support during our recent marathons. We had another =
record-breaking fund drive and some really great programming. We =
appreciate your support and look forward to a lot more great programming =
now that much of the battle in the Pacifica situation has been resolved. =
Members of the KFCF/Fresno Free College Foundation Board of Directors =
will be attending the Pacifica National Board Meeting in Los Angeles =
this coming weekend, so if you have any concerns you'd like us to =
convey, send us an e-mail at office@kfcf.org .
Locally, we have a number of great things we are working on, including =
a KFCF Benefit with Utah Phillips and Kenny Hall at the Forestiere =
Underground Gardens in Fresno on April 13th. Information on tickets, =
cost, etc. should be available this week at www.kfcf.org , and tickets =
will be available at The Movies in Van Ness Village in the Tower =
District in Fresno.
We are approaching one of our bi-annual solar conjunction periods. The =
conjunction (sometimes referred to as a solar outage) is when the sun in =
its' seasonal arc lines itself up directly behind the satellite that =
transmits the KPFA signal to Fresno. It happens once a day for a few =
minutes for about a week in March and October during the late morning.
During this "conjunction" the satellite receiver will see the sun as a =
much more effective transmitter of energy than the few watts the =
satellite uses, and will cause gargling, popping or muting of the audio =
from the satellite receiver for a few moments. A schedule of times is =
at the end of this e-mail and most occurances will be far shorter than =
the times calculated by the software.
This is similar in effect to the "rain fades" we get when a heavy rain =
storm in Fresno or Berkeley (or both) has raindrops that are half the =
diameter of the wavelength of the radio frequency used for the satellite =
system and the raindrops "absorb" the signal, causing the receiver to =
mute, gargle and pop. We apologize for the inconvenience to our =
listeners, but we have no control over Mother Nature, and hope you'll =
understand during the few minor outages we have over the year.

Forestiere Underground Gardens Concert
KFCF 88.1 FM and the Fresno Free College Foundation are sponsoring a
premiere concert at the Forestiere Underground Gardens April 13, beginning
at 6 p.m. Performing that evening are Utah Phillips, Kenny Hall and Jemmy
Bluestein.
The Underground Gardens, located at 5021 W. Shaw Ave. in Fresno, were
designed and hand-sculpted by Baldasare Forestiere, a Sicilian immigrant. In
the early 1900s, Forestiere began to carve a thoroughly unique underground
retreat to escape the San Joaquin Valley's excessive heat. After nearly 40
years with hand tools and persistent effort he succeeded in creating a cool
subterranean complex fashioned after the "visions stored in my mind." In
the midst of the manmade caverns, is a large banquet room Forestiere had
intended as an entertainment venue. KFCF will be honoring Forestiere's
desire to share his unique creation with others with this first ever
concert.
Utah Phillips is a folksinger, humorist, archivist, storyteller and tramp
and is still considered a "Grand Duke of Hobos." He educates and
illuminates, softening his punches with humor and a certain unexpected
gentleness. He was recently presented a Lifetime Achievement Award by North
America's largest traditional music organization, the Folk Alliance.
Kenny Hall, a Fresno resident, is a veritable living musical encyclopedia
with a repertoire of over 5,000 folk tunes. Blind from birth, Kenny is world
renowned for his excellent mandolin and violin musicianship.
Jemmy Bluestein, a member of Fresno's Bluestein family, is a singer and
stringer of people's music. Jemmy will perform an eclectic set to open the
evening performance.
KFCF and the Fresno Free College Foundation are dedicated to the principle
that the health and well-being of a community are measured by the respect it
shows for the civil, intellectual, and artistic freedom of its citizens, and
that the exercise of this freedom enriches each individual and the society
at large. Since 1975, KFCF has broadcast programming from KPFA in Berkeley
as well as locally produced programs.
Tickets to benefit KFCF are $25 and are available by calling 559-233-2221 or
by purchasing them at The Movies, 1435 N. Van Ness in Fresno. Food and drink
will be available. Seating is limited.
