Dear Friend,

Global Exchange, together with CALPIRG, The Utility Reform Network
(TURN), Women's Energy Matters, and Greenaction, invite you to the
state-wide Emergency Energy Summit to be held on Friday, April
27th in Sacramento. The purpose of this emergency summit is to
form a coalition of diverse groups concerned about the energy
crisis to advocate more effectively for clean, affordable, public
energy systems for the 21st century.

The summit will be held from 10am-5pm on Friday, April 27th at the
University of Northern California's Lorenzo Patiņo School of Law,
1012 J Street in Sacramento. We are inviting a wide range of
interested groups, including environmentalists, consumer groups,
unions, representatives of public utilities, community representatives
and small "green energy" businesses. Each of the 100 or so
participants should represent an organization or community,
or have experience working on energy issues.

Issues addressed at the summit will include how to stop energy
corporations and utilities from gouging ratepayers; how PG&Ešs
bankruptcy affects our options; the possibility of imposing a
windfall profits tax on the generators or taking over their
facilities through eminent domain; path-breaking programs for
conservation/ efficiency/renewable energy; stop polluting power
plants and oppose nuclear power; achieving more control over our
energy resources with a state power authority, municipal utility
districts, and other public power options.

The format will include presentations by experts in the above areas,
as well as workshops. Confirmed speakers include Dr. Donald
Aitken, Union of Concerned Scientists; Nettie Hoge, Director of
TURN; Sim Van Der Rym, energy advisor to former Gov. Jerry Brown;
Bill Magavern, Sierra Club; Junona A. Jonas, General Manager of
Alameda Power and Telecom; Robin David of International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW); Bradley Angel of
Greenaction, George Matthews of Community Energy Services
Corporation, among others.
